Savasana ~ A Great Pose for Practicing the Art of Doing Nothing

“…every day, a little ‘bit dying.” Pattabhi Jois

Perhaps you’ve discovered, as I have, that you have some of your best do nothing time when you’re laying on your mat in Savasana (“Corpse Pose”).  For another take on the subject, check out the article “Find Serenity in Savasana” over at Yoga Journal.

And for an amazing analysis of savasana, click on the resting stick figure below:

I think this is so interesting. I know most folks like the relaxation at the end of class but to delve deeply into the pose isn’t something we practice much. I only have a few students who fall asleep in Savasana but who knows how many have whirling minds?

Interestingly, at the end of Restorative class I don’t think I have ever had anyone fall asleep in Savasana. Maybe it is because the entire practice is so introspective that their minds are already in Savasana mode vs. a regular class where Savasana is just rest at the end.

Thanks for the great links. Namaste ~ Sara

Sara – Can’t say I have much experience with Restorative Yoga (as in using a lot of props and holding the poses for long periods of time), although sometimes that’s just what the doctor ordered for my tight hamstrings. But I have spent plenty of time right there on the edge of consciousness and unconsciousness while lying in Savasana (okay, I fall asleep sometimes). But “Savasana sleep” sort of has the same effect on me as Yoga Nidra. I feel great afterwards. Enjoyed taking a look at your website and blog. Have a great day!
